First contact

  "Haaaa..."

Glenn sighed loudly. The individuals who had emerged from the bunker were wandering aimlessly just outside the entrance to the refuge. They seemed to be discovering the world around them.

It's normal, of course, since they disappeared underground several hundred thousand years ago.

One of the men, for some reason, marveled at the grass; he touched it once, then plucked a few to smell them; he seemed to find the smell magnificent, judging by his facial expression.

  Then he ate them.

Glenn wasn't surprised, just amused; they hadn't seen grass for a very long time, and their first action had been to eat it. The worst thing was that he seemed to find it extremely tasty. As he ate more in large quantities and then invited the rest of the cohort to eat some, they seemed to enjoy it just as much.

Watching them eat, Glenn frowned, complaining that he no longer had any real need to eat; he only did it occasionally, just for pleasure. After many years of not being able to eat because of the climate, he got used to the pain of hunger.

So he ate whenever he could find fruit or vegetables. He even went so far as to find salt crystals to season his dishes.

After a few minutes, the cohort had finished eating, and, shaking their heads, they advanced into the forest that had grown up near the bunker. Glenn, who had been watching them from a distance, decided to follow, still from a distance.

  "Whoa!"

He could clearly understand their expressions of total amazement. These people had lived all their lives without ever seeing natural light or even seeing true nature.

Glenn remembered the concept of the allegory of the cave that he had learned at school. He found an amusing similarity between the allegory and the cohort in front of him. Both were people trapped in their caves, seeing what was there and learning it as absolute truth.

I was absolutely shocked by reality after coming out of the cave.

Like at the end of this story, Glenn could bet that the people in the cave wouldn't believe what they saw there. Unless it was some kind of official mission, that is.

Sometime later, they walked around the forest, still marvelling at the magnificent green colour added to the sunlight passing through the leaves.

As they left the cave, they chatted excitedly, probably about what they had just seen. On closer inspection, Glenn noticed that he couldn't read the lips of the members of the cohort. But since he couldn't hear what was being said despite his advanced hearing, he couldn't guess what language they were speaking.

Even though, after not seeing any humans for so long, he was no longer used to them and had therefore lost the ability to read lips,

A few hours later, the cohort seemed to have searched the area around the bunker, and seeing that they weren't going any further today and would be spending the night outside, Glenn smiled.

"Isn't this the perfect time to introduce myself?"

Glenn opened the makeshift bag he'd made himself from tree leaves, branches, and bark. He plunged his hand into it and, after a moment, pulled out something that looked an awful lot like an apple, although it was black.

  Stolen story; please report.

When he first discovered this fruit, Glenn had been the happiest man in the world, but after eating a colossal number of them, he had grown bored and disgusted. Despite this, he always kept one with him, sometimes having a sudden craving for something sweet.

This 'apple', if you could call it that, only looked like an apple. If you had to describe the taste, it was more like a mix between a nectarine, a mango, and a lemon without any acidity, all bathed in sugar.

It tasted divine. With this, he had finalized his plan for this evening—his plan to socialize with humans after hundreds of thousands of years!

As Glenn slowly approached their location, he noticed a strange glow.

  'Hmm? What's that?'

Lifting his head from the bush, he made out what lay ahead. By walking up to the cohort, they'd had time to build an entire camp; there were as many tents as there were people, plus one more. Glenn couldn't quite work out what it was for, but he hoped he'd learn soon.

In the middle of this grouping of tents, there was a powerful blue light. Glenn frowned. He had a bad memory of a blue light; this light was accompanied by voices that seemed happy, and many people seemed to laugh together. A little uncomfortable and excited at the same time, he moved towards the light.

Hiding behind one of the tents, he took a closer look at the light and what was nearby. The light was, in fact, a lamp emanating a blue light. Glenn could see in his head all the film scenes where the protagonists were gathered around a fire, telling terrifying stories, and then singing together.

Apart from the lamp, the scene was rather similar to what he had in mind; they were laughing and toasting while singing out loud.

Glenn turned and closed his eyes.

"Okay, Glenn, you've been preparing for this moment for thousands of years; this is your moment."

Giving himself one last encouragement, Glenn walked towards the group with a bright smile on his face.

"Hum, hello! I'm Glenn, 600,000 years old, straight, and looking for someone to accompany me on this journey of initiation into my new self. How about you?"

The cohort instantly stopped feasting and looked at Glenn incredulously, probably not expecting a stranger to arrive from a place that had been devoid of human life for so long.

In an awkward silence, Glenn began to sweat profusely.

"Er, did I say something wrong?"

As he said this, the whole cohort instantly stood up and pulled items from a holster on the side of their belts.

Glenn, surprised by their actions, stepped back quickly and raised his arms as if in surrender.

"W-w-wait! I'm not going to do anything!"

Succeeding in making his intention clear, they stopped, still with their weapons pointed at Glenn, but instead of an incredulous look, they had a serious and cautious air.

As Glenn suspected, they couldn't understand a word he was saying; he wasn't speaking the same language.

She must have changed over time; otherwise, why would he react like that? I looked perfectly natural, didn't I?'

He still had his arms raised to the sky, and approaching them once more, he pointed at himself.

  "Hum, ME.GLENN!"

The members of the cohort looked at him warily and frowned; they looked troubled. Then they looked at each other.

At that moment, the one at the front, supposed to be the leader of the group, advanced towards Glenn; he had medium-length, black, wavy hair, and his eyes were, apart from his severe frown, tired. His clothes were brown and green. As for his musculature, it was extremely developed, and Glenn felt like a child next to him.

"We get what you're saying, you moron. Who are you? Where did you come from? Are there any other humans living outside the bunker?"

Glenn opened his eyes wide, then smiled intensely.

"Haaaa, then you understand what I'm saying. To tell you the truth, I was afraid my presentation had failed."

Glenn paused for a second, slowly observing the few men and women. His smile widened further.

  'Game time!'

"You know, I've been waiting for the return of the human race for a few hundred thousand years, and I've done everything I could to repair your mistakes and remove everything you caused. You're causing me quite a lot of trouble, you know?"

The cohort looked at him in disbelief; they didn't understand what he was saying. However, the leader of the group looked at Glenn with shock, contempt, and understanding.

Just then, one of the members looked at Glenn.

  "Hum, what do you mean?"

Glenn smiled once more; however, his smile this time was calm and confident.

"I'm sure you'll figure it out pretty quickly, but you see, my impatience is too great, so I'll answer you."

Glenn paused to look up at the sky and pointed, pointed at a small point of light in the sky. He'd been looking forward to this moment for years. The moment when humans would appear again, before 'it' happened
